Summary
Nineteen-year-old Caroline Singleton travels to Ireland in 1915 to serve as a governess for Lord and Lady Wilcox in their country house, Thornley Hall. It is the middle of World War 1 and the shy English girl has recently lost her best friend, her beloved brother Ralph, to the fighting. Grief-stricken and alone, she is astonished when she is befriended by—and strangely attracted to—a bold young Irish housemaid, Grace, who comes from a squalid background in Dublin. First friendship blossoms between them, then love. But can the passion of their forbidden relationship endure through the upheavals of Grace's involvement in the Easter Rising and Ireland's difficult battle for freedom?
